Carthority :: A Mechanic - Look at the Used Car

volkswagen jettaMechanic Checks - Very Important!

Tell the seller you would like to have your mechanic check it out - see how they respond, if they hesitate or refuse- move on - do not buy that car!

When your mechanic looks at the car and if       they find problems - ask them to write down the problems and the corresponding price to fix them. When you make your First Offer for the car simply deduct these amounts from your First Offer and show this paperwork to the dealer or person.

Ask a local mechanic how much they charge, it should not be much more than $50 - $100.

This will be money well spent as it guarantees you will not buy a lemon. If you don't have a mechanic then simply call around to the more reputable repair shops in your area or ask friends who they would recommend.

If, as we suggested, you are looking at 2 or 3 different Used Cars - pick the best one you have found and have the inspection and report done on that one. This important step alone can save you thousands in the long run.

Remember, you can always find a similar car at a different dealership.

There are thousands of cars for sale in your area, don't fall in love with just one particular car. Get the report and inspection done on the car you are interested in and if they show that there are problems with the car - then you just saved yourself a lot of time and money.

Always keep in mind - you are in control.
